We have taken a broad-based approach to reducing packing waste across all aspects of the business through our involvement with the National Packaging Covenant. As a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant, Blackmores is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our packaging, closing the recycling loop and developing economically viable and sustainable recycling systems. Find out more about Blackmores Australian Packaging Convenant 2010-2015 Action Plan.
The covenant marks eight years of continuous improvement in the environmental performance of Blackmores’ packaging and waste minimisation, and this was acknowledged at the 2008 Packaging Magazine Evolution Awards, where Blackmores was recognised as winner in the Pharmaceutical Packaging Action Award Category – our third consecutive year as a finalist and second as winner.
The Blackmores Campus, the company’s headquarters, opened in 2009 has a carbon footprint one eighth of that of a comparable development, along with a range of additional environmental features. To read more about this click here.
As part of Blackmores’ commitment to further reduce carbon emissions and minimise our carbon footprint, the conversion of all our fleet vehicles to LPG will be completed in 2010.
Recognising the commitment we have made, Blackmores was awarded Ethical Investor’s Small Company of the Year Award in 2008, and the Pittwater Sustainability in Business Award in 2009.
Our social responsibility extends beyond our care for the environment, striving to make a difference by investing back into the community to help create a brighter future. Current initiatives includes support of:
-
The Macular Degeneration Foundation - Blackmores has helped to raise more than $2 million dollars for the Foundation through the sale of key eye health products
-
The McGrath Foundation is supported through the donation of a percentage of sales from all multivitamin products
-
The Heart Research Institute of Australia receive ongoing support for their Annual fundraising activities and dinner
- Other worthy causes to receive sponsorship from Blackmores include the Blackmores Eye Unit Myanmar, Yalari Foundation, the MINDD Foundation, Arthritis Australia, The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, and the Australian Thyroid Foundation.
Blackmores encourages all staff to participate in its matched donations charitable scheme, whereby staff have the option to have 0.5% of their taxable pay is deducted each payday. Blackmores matches this and twice yearly each participating employee nominates a registered charity to receive the donation.
In addition to this initiative, community groups, fundraising and awareness activities are supported during the year with Blackmores' gift baskets and financial contributions.
