Hi I have been doing a bit of reading about how grains affect digestion and was wondering if anyone knows about spelt? Is it a safe alternative if you suffer from chronic constipation? Thanks :)

Hello Mel, I am Rosaria, one the Blackmores naturopaths. Constipation and grains is a very interesting subject, thank you for bringing it up! Not everybody is sensitive to gluten grains; however, people sensitive to gluten may experience constipation if they eat too much of them too often. Gluten sensitivity can cause inadequate absorption of one or more nutrients, and the resulting deficiency deprives the bowel of nutrients needed for healthy function and regular transit time. If you are suspecting gluten sensitivity, you may want to try some alternative grains such as quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and millet. Spelt still contains some gluten, although to a lesser extent. You may want to try it and see if it agrees with you. Should you need more information Mel, please call our naturopathic Advisory service at 1800 803 760. All the best!
