Does anyone know if swimming is any good for toning the tops of the backs of you thighs? I've heard that swimming laps freestyle is good for this area? If not, any other exercises that work for the back of your legs please?

swimming in general is good for your health. As with all exercising find a good coach to help perfect your stroke and strengthen your muscles. To refine your GMs and thighs use flippers, again these must be used correctly when pool lapping or you can end up with very sore calf muscles.Flippers force you to use thighs and GMs. Backstroke keeps my upper back andshoulder muscles limber and breastroke strengthens my chest muscles. All swimming helps with breathing and a good coach will correct any errors made in this area. Be aware that swimming is aerobic and good for the circulation but you need to combine this with walking or a higher impact exercise to create bone strength. Best of all ,swimming is a great way to destress, and I always feel better when I get out of the pool.

Hi Sarah, it sounds like you are trying to workout the gluteus maximus muscle aswell as the hamstrings. Walking up stairs in an excellent training exercise for toning these muscles in particular. Start with just one step at a time, but once you are warmed OK, try walking 2 steps at a time which will extend your stride and really work the hamstring muscles.
Don't attempt too many flights of stairs on your first outing, as it will be stressful on your achillies too, so gradually build up over a few weeks. Walking steep hills too will be of benifit.
Regards, Peter - Running Coach

I have started going to Bikram Yoga to tone up my legs, and it really helps! I've also noticed that my legs are stronger in my bike riding so maybe this might be an option. I find that swimming really helps with my upper body and back muscles.
