Hola:
Saludos

Hello Peter. My name is Kim and I am a Blackmores Naturopath.

Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are flat, dark green seeds. They are a good dietary source of the minerals zinc, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese, as well as protein and have an essential fatty acid content.

They can be bought in health food stores and some supermarkets and it is always best to buy organic if possible.

The fact that pumpkin seeds serve as a good source of zinc may contribute to the role of pumpkin seeds in promoting prostate health. It is recommended to eat about ½ a cup of day for zinc and essential fatty acid content.

Peter if you are enquiring about pumpkin seeds for their beneficial role in the management of benign prostatic enlargement, you may like to call our Blackmores Naturopathic Service on 1800 803 760 and one of our Naturopaths can talk to you about other beneficial nutrients and natural treatments for this condition.

All the best, Kim

I have heard about 'prostate milking/stimulation', I was curious so I researched a little bit online. Supposedly, if you stimulate your prostate regularly, it increases blood flow to the prostate, and reduces your risk of prostate inflammation/cancer. Is this true?
Also, what are some other measures of maintaining a healthy prostate?
My partner has an increased risk of developing prostate problems.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Sarah, I'm one of the naturopaths at Blackmores. "Prostate milking" is part of a treatment called the Wise-Anderson Protocol. This protocol combines physio therapy, relaxation techniques, cognitive behavioural therapy and "trigger point relaxation therapy with a personal wand" (i.e. prostate milking) and was very successful for helping men with prostatitis (an infection of the prostate gland) and pelvic pain. You’ll see some websites have generalised prostate milking as a cure all for all kinds of prostate problems, which is not quite what the research is saying. It’s true that improving blood flow will improve the health of any organ but I think there are less invasive ways to protect your prostate. Certain antioxidants have been found to help protect prostate health from free radical damage. Some of these are: lycopene (found in tomatoes - especially cooked tomatoes), vitamin E (found in wheat germ), selenium (found in brazil nuts), zinc (found in oysters and pumpkin seeds). If you check the Diet and Lifestyle tips in this piece on prostate health it will give your partner a good starting point to go by. www.blackmores.com.au/.../prostate-benign-prostate-hyperplasia and he can always contact our naturopathic advisory line on 1800 803 760 if he wants a bit more advice.

There are 2 Blackmore prostate products (Proseren Saw Palmetto and Prostate Health Formula). I am wondering what are the difference between the two if I am going to buy them.

Hello Steven, Blackmores Proseren Saw Palmetto® contains 1.6g of saw palmetto. Blackmores Prostate Health Formula contains the same amount of saw palmetto plus a range of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals providing a comprehensive approach to the maintenance of prostate health. If you are not taking any other supplements containing zinc, selenium and vitamin E, the second formula would be more appropriate for you. If you need more information, please contact our Blackmores Naturopathic Advisory Service on 1800 803 760. Kind regards, Rosaria (Blackmores Naturopath)
