Ugh!!! Have developed rosacea, or maybe I have had it for a while and it was misdiagnosed....Has recently got much worse. Anyone interested in a discussion group around this hideous condition i.e. to trade great ideas and products which work, tips to manage outbreaks etc.? There is a good Rosacea Support Group it is U.S. based but most products are American (but in desperation I have ordered one to try).

Hi Kimberly

My name is Kate and I am a Blackmores naturopath.

There are some great essential oils that you can use on the skin that may help to relieve the redness that you get with rosacea. German chamomile, lavender and neroli are gentle on the skin and help to reduce redness and improve skin circulation. Add a few drops to a carrier oil, rosehip would be best as it contains vitamin C, and apply morning and night.

Good nutrition is important and nutrients such as vitamin C, anthocyanidins, omega 3 and silica are beneficial for rosacea. Eat dark green leafy, orange, red and yellow veggies, berries- blueberries, raspberries etc, oily fish and oats.

Hi Kimberly, I also have rosacea & it drives me demented as sometimes I feel like I'm on fire. I have no idea how to treat it & my GP (in the UK) says it's something I have to live with.
A local heath food store assistant recommended a rose oil based moisturiser & to give up sugar. I would be very interested in how you get on with your American product & the essential oil regime that Kate recommended.

The news about the oils is wonderful, I did a couple of aromatherapy courses with In Essence many years ago, so I am sorry to say I didn't even think about essential oils. Silly me! Can you advise the best carrier oil to put on the skin? i.e. sweet almond, jojoba oil, other? Also, what do you think of jojoba oil as a moisturier for rosacea affected skin?
I have excellent nutrition, the suggestions you make are a normal part of my diet. I think that is one of the frustrating things about this - I eat so well, have never smoked, don't take drugs, don't ever drink alcohol. I do think it is partially menopause related. What do you think? It does seem that skin conditions really flare up at this time. Thanks for the information you posted, if you could let me know about which carrier oil would be best for the face and also how many drops of each oil to use. Also - sorry more questions - should I use a combination i.e. German chamomile and lavendar, or neroli and GC?

Hi Kimberly,
Thank you for your post.
The best carrier oil would be rosehip oil due to its antioxidant properties and essential fatty acids. Jojoba is also a good moisturizer but I am unable to find information regarding its specificity for a condition like rosacea so I suggest that you experiment with the different oils and see which ones suit your individual skin type. Combining the oils of German Chamomile and lavender or German Chamomile and neroli should be fine and again, you will probably find certain combinations work better for your skin .
With any skin condition, a naturopathic approach would include addressing any digestive issues present as there is a relationship between digestive function and skin health. Adding lemon juice to water first thing in the morning, eating bitter greens and drinking ginger tea may all help to stimulate digestion.
I can understand your frustration with developing this condition as your diet seems to be very good and it is wonderful that you are already eating the foods that Kate recommended. However, it does appear that many women of menopausal age are affected by rosacea due to decreased oestrogen levels triggering hot flushes and heat is a common trigger for the exacerbation of rosacea. You could consider supplementing with plant oestrogens to help naturally build up hormone levels and manage hot flushes.

I trust this information has been helpful Kimberly, I wish you all the best with your health.
Kind regards,
Rebekah

Hi Maxine,
I’m sorry to hear that you have started having break outs & dry skin.
Changes like these in your skin can be due to a number of factors including hormones, diet or medication changes, and stress. For more information on which products would be most suitable for you, please contact the Naturopathic Advisory service on 1800-803-760, or email us at advice@blackmores.com.au
Warm regards,
Charmaine (Blackmore Naturopath).

MSM Sulfur is great for the skin. Buy a cream containing sulfur, (or even mix some of the powder into a cream containing vitamin E. I squeezed a vitamin E and a vitamin A capsule into the cream as well), and it will reduce or even get rid of acne rosacea. Taking the MSM powder daily, along with Vitamin C powder (calcium ascorbate or any ascorbate C powder), or even just swallow or chew vitamin C tabs. It will greatly improve your skin, make your hair shiny and generally improve your overall well-being. It's great for arthritis sufferers too, as it reduces inflammation of joints. Vitamin C helps sulfur work better. Sulfur is the 'inflammation curer' in the body. Burning feet syndrome, or any burning sensation in the body calls for sulfur. Homeopathic sulfur is also a good remedy.

I forgot to mention that eating your greens, which contain sulfur, also will improve your condition/s. Nuts and seeds, and some protein also contain sulfur, and eggs of course. Many foods contain sulfur, but sometimes you need the extra boost that MSM can give you. It's not harmful, and any not used by the body is flushed out of your system, so you can't 'overdose' on it.
