If you have too much to do in too little time, it's vital that you take a few moments away from it all. By pushing the pause button and relaxing for just a few moments, you can re-boot your energy levels, and help combat the harmful effects of stress.

Following is a list of 10 ways you can unwind at home or work that will only take a few minutes, yet leave you refreshed and re-focused.

At home

1. Turn off the phone and the television - Escape all the noise by giving yourself a few moments of silence. Turn off any potential distractions like the television, radio and phone, and feel yourself unwind. Savour the silence and enjoy the quiet time to yourself.

2. Have a bath or shower – Immersing yourself in warm water can help to loosen tense muscles and make you feel relaxed. Add scented oils or bath salts to further set the mood. The feeling of cleanliness after washing is also refreshing.

3. Have a power nap – Try to sneak in a few minutes sleep to boost your energy levels. Longer naps may leave you tired and groggy, however a short nap can leave you refreshed, especially if you've had a poor night's sleep.

4. Aromatherapy - Essential oils such as rose, lavender and vanilla are used by aromatherapists to have a calming effect. Use a few drops in an oil burner, or light some scented candles to lighten the mood in your home.

5. Boost your nutrient intake – The body has increased requirements for vitamins (especially the B group) and minerals during periods of increased stress. If your energy levels are low and you feel overwhelmed, you may not be getting all the nutrients you need from your diet. A multivitamin that includes the B-complex vitamins, vitamin C and magnesium can help your body manage stress.

At work

1. Take 10 deep breaths - Deep breathing is a quick, easy and natural way to help counter the effects of stress. Increasing your oxygen intake through conscious, deeper breathing can both help you relax, and increase your energy levels. Take a slow deep breath in through your nose, then out through your mouth, and repeat 10 times.

2. Walk away - A short walk away from your desk gives you a mental and physical escape from your immediate working environment. A short burst of activity such as walking or stretching will also help to boost your circulation.

3. Phone a friend - Spend a few minutes on the phone to share your troubles and get the perspective of someone you trust. Even a light-hearted call to a friend to share a laugh can help you feel less stressed.

4. Listen to relaxing music - Listening to slow, soothing music can help you unwind and alter your mood. Load your computer or digital music player with songs that calm you, and call on them when you need a short escape.

5. Give yourself a massage - When you don't have time for a whole-body massage, give your neck and shoulders a rub. Self-massage can help to ease stress and muscle tension without ever having to leave your desk.
