But why does pregnancy trigger weight gain in expectant fathers, and can it be prevented? After all, you are about to become a role model, and need to set good example.

The following tips highlight 3 of the biggest changes you can expect to face in the process of expanding your family, including suggestions on how to prevent them from expanding your waistline.

Less time
Visits to antenatal classes, scheduled scans, baby furniture stores and even painting the nursery could all appear on a new Dad's diary. Where did all your free time go? Take-away food might seem like an easy answer, but it can place a lot of pressure on your belt buckle.

Solution - Good nutrition is vital to keep your weight in check, and for the health of your partner and unborn child. Get organised with your food. Plan out your meals, and cook in large batches so you can freeze leftovers for another time.

Less sleep
As your partner finds it harder to get comfortable in bed, her restlessness may impact on your sleep quality. You might also have a few extra things on your mind making it difficult to fall asleep. The end result is tiredness and fatigue, which can dampen your motivation to exercise.

Solution - Go to bed early. Give yourself the best possible chance to get a good night's sleep. It also increases the likelihood that you'll exercise first thing in the morning, which may be better at helping your body burn fat.

More stress
Becoming a father for the first time can bring great joy, but it can also be overwhelming. Changes to your lifestyle, new financial pressures and added responsibilities may introduce worries and fears that have never crossed your mind in the past. Stress levels may increase even further after your child is born.

Solution - Find an activity that helps you relax, and burns fat at the same time. Examples include yoga, stretching, or an easy session of bush walking, swimming or paddling. Experiment to find what activity best helps you unwind, and include it as part of your exercise routine at least once or twice a week.
