How to Make Kid’s Party Games Active & Fun

2 mins to read
Kid’s party coming up? Here’s how to get kids up and moving and away from the lolly table.

The importance of play

Keeping children active has never been more important in a world that offers endless opportunities to sit and be entertained by television, iPads, mobile phones and gaming consoles.

Kid’s games that see them engaging in play offers a wide range of benefits to children, including the development of balance, coordination, agility, strength, speed, flexibility, and stamina.

Active kid’s games offer valuable lessons from playing team games, like how to cooperate with others, how to work hard, and what it’s like to win and lose.

Parties are the perfect opportunity for kid’s games that get them moving and out into the fresh air and enjoying classic backyard games.

If you don’t have much of a backyard, choose a park or outdoor space in your local area that you can take advantage of.

5 tips for active kid's party games

1. Team sport

Have a kit bag of sporting toys and equipment, such as a soccer ball, Frisbee, volleyball, badminton kit, skipping rope, cricket equipment, tee ball, and totem tennis.

Supervise at a distance if you can, but also ensure everyone gets a fair go. By encouraging children to participate in a wide variety of activities, you increase their chances of finding a sport that suits their skills and personality that may last a lifetime.

2. Play the classics

There are a wide variety of kids games that can be played with minimal space and equipment. These activities help children develop basic skills including running, jumping, kicking, throwing, catching and climbing.

Use your imagination to make up your own games, or re-live your childhood by trying some of these classic yard games that can be enjoyed by everyone, including:

  • Jump rope and double Dutch
  • Hopscotch
  • Tunnel ball
  • Capitan ball
  • Hide and seek
  • Forcings back

3. Don't be afraid to outsource

If you want to step things up in the entertainment stakes (or if it all gets too hard) there are a wide range of party games that you can bring the exoerts in for:
  • The soccer party – Trained coaches will take your crew through a series of fun drills and games to keep them entertained
  • Jumping castle – Get the kids jumping and climbing, and some models have a basketball hoop for an added challenge
  • Laser tag – Shoot to thrill, as kids run and dive behind obstacles and structures, all in the name of fun
  • Disco party – Hire an entertainer who can turn your home into a dance floor, and keep the kids bopping along to all the latest tunes

4. Focus on fun

It may be challenging to deal with different ages, genders and skill levels, but try to make it fun for everyone. Praise children for the positive aspects of their performance, no matter who wins (especially for children under the age of 10).

Enjoying any activity at an early age is strongly associated with continued participation through adult life.

5. Stay safe

Staying safe and injury free must be a primary focus, especially with other people’s children in your care.

Hydration is important, especially on hot days, so schedule drinks breaks and have plenty of cold water on hand.

Skin protection is also a must when kids are playing outside, so seek out shade, adopt a no hat - no play policy, and have sun cream on hand.
