Does TV advertising influence your food choices?

Watching cricket on television is a great summer past time. It doesn't start till late, so there's plenty of time to indulge in a morning workout, allowing you to enjoy time on the couch without guilt. But unfortunately, you can't escape the endless advertisements between overs and it's obvious that much of the advertising is focused on fast food.

Watching cricket on television is a great summer past time. It doesn't start till late, so there's plenty of time to indulge in a morning workout, allowing you to enjoy time on the couch without guilt. But unfortunately, you can't escape the endless product placement, merchandising plugs and advertisements between overs. Even though I like to mute the sound during ad breaks, it's obvious that much of the advertising is focused on fast food.

And it's not just the ordinary, run-of-the-mill, hot chips and hamburger fast food. This year, it seems to be all about extreme fast food - the type that can bowl you over and send you to an early grave. I'm talking about burgers with two fried chicken pieces instead of a standard burger bun, or a pizza crust stuffed with hot dog meat. And I thought pizza crusts stuffed with cheese were bad enough. Maybe they could stuff the pizza crust with fried chicken and send your blood fat levels into a real spin.

It's pretty obvious that fast food outlets target busy families during the holiday period when parents have less time or less inclination to prepare healthy meals. But why do the fast food chains have to sink to the depths of Frankenstein food? What about the healthy food menus that we've been hearing so much about in recent years? That small step forward has now been replaced with two very large steps backwards.

Money spent on fast food advertising must be effective; otherwise fast food companies wouldn't be able to justify the expense. But what influence is junk food advertising having on the health of our nation? Just as importantly, what influence does it have on you?

Do you think fast food advertisements have any influence on your eating behaviour?
