Gout is a form of arthritis and is associated with high-blood-levels of uric acid, a compound that's a by-product of your body's normal breakdown of food. Uric acid itself is a product of the metabolism of purines, compounds found in a range of food.

Foods containing purines;

  • Offal (including related products like pate)
  • Game meat
  • Some seafood (especially anchovies and sardines)
  • Some vegetables including asparagus and mushrooms

Normally your body maintains uric acid levels by dissolving it in the bloodstream, filtering it through the kidneys and then urinating. If you start creating too much uric acid or other factors prevent your body dealing with the load, then uric acid crystals form on the joints. This is what causes the sudden pain, redness and swelling of gout.

Diet and lifestyle

It is advisable to see your doctor as soon as possible. This is important as gout can cause severe pain and permanent damage to the joints if left untreated. The dietary and lifestyle suggestions below are recommended as support measures but not as a replacement for medical treatment from a qualified medical practitioner.               

Lowering uric acid levels is a priority and changing your diet to reduce your intake of foods containing purines may help with this.

Important notes

Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition (CPPD) or Pseudogout is a similar condition to gout though its causes are unknown. It has been linked with a variety of causes including low magnesium levels in the blood, an over-active parathyroid gland, and excessive quantities of iron, as well as genetic factors.

Not sure if I have gout, will see a doctor 2/1/14. But if I do, what is the fastest way of eliminating it. Pain came on about 6 days ago, top of left foot, between toes and ankle, but not them, slightly swollen, but not much, slightly red. Weight on foot does not hurt, but trying to lift the toes does

Have had gout pain now for approx 4 weeks, doctors have given me various medications but nothing helping. I am fit and not overweight, eat mainly vegetarian diet, am trying anything to alliviate the pain, any suggestions, thank you.

Hi I have recently diagnosed a high reading of uric acid in my body discovered by a blood Test result I had received.
My reading told by my doctor is 53 very high he said I was surprised and little shocked by this news.
So what is the best remedy to control this problem,please advice me.

my main way to currently reduce gout is to avoid drinking alcohol. I am reducing weight. my finger joints have become swollen with mild pain. I will have to take regular medication soon but am concerned about the side-effects will be worse than my current symptons.

Thank you for the information that I have just read. For the first time in my life I have been experiencing swollen toes and a sore foot. My Father (deceased) suffered gout profoundly. So, I have to get myself fixed. One day before Xmas, terrific. But I will try and abstain from alcohol, and the various foods and when I can get an appointment with my GP, which will be impossible at this time of year. I will endeavour to fix this problem.

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had a gout attack.
Unfortunately there aren’t any natural remedies that will provide quick pain relief. However to help prevent further attacks I would suggest following as many tips from the article written above – in particular try to follow the dietary advice – avoiding sugar and foods that contain purines (eg: gravies, stocks, organ meats, shellfish, anchovies, sardines, herring, mackerel, spinach, mussels, mushrooms and asparagus). Also try to avoid alcohol and ensure that you are well hydrated.

i have been taking a gout preventive tablet daily but ran out last week , on Saturday i only had Two can of light beer and experienced a gout attack late Saturday night , i got more preventive tablets today , can you suggest any natural relief or preventive natural relief
