The health benefits of olive leaf

2 mins to read
The olive tree has been a part of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures for millennia. Naturopath Kate Ferguson tells us why olive leaves are proving to be a valuable herbal remedy for our health and wellbeing.

Olea europaea – the olive tree has historically been a symbol of peace, abundance and glory with the leaves used to crown the victors of competition. Legend has it that Athena, the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology, created the olive tree as the most useful invention of mankind.

The olive has been used in traditional remedies in Spain, Israel, Turkey, France, Italy and Morocco.  Olive leaves consumed as a tea have long been used as a traditional remedy for a range of conditions throughout the Mediterranean and it is now a popular herbal remedy here in Australia.

What’s it for?
Olive leaf is traditionally used for the relief of symptoms of cold & flu such as sore throat, fever and coughs.

Olive leaf extract may also support a healthy cardiovascular system and heart health, and it has traditionally been used to help maintain normal blood pressure.

How does it work?
There are a number of phenolic compounds in olive leaf that are responsible for its therapeutic benefits. The main active constituent of olive leaf is a phenolic compound called oleuropein.

Olive leaf extract is an antioxidant, and it has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

Where can I get it?
With winter upon us, there has never been a better time to take advantage of the health benefits of olive leaf.
