Can healthy food still taste good?

Taste is one of the major motivators behind the foods we choose to eat. It’s pretty hard to eat something if you don’t like it, even if it is good for you. At the end of the day, you don’t put carbohydrates, or protein, or fibre on your plate.

Taste is one of the major motivators behind the foods we choose to eat. It’s pretty hard to eat something if you don’t like it, even if it is good for you. At the end of the day, you don’t put carbohydrates, or protein, or fibre on your plate. We eat food, and if it tastes good, people are more likely to eat it. Obviously there needs to be a balance, because foods loaded with fat, sugar and salt may taste good, but it isn’t necessarily good for your health in large amounts

So the key question is – how do you make healthy food taste good? Healthy eating is easy to stick to when your foods are full of flavour. It’s also important to avoid dietary boredom and feelings of deprivation, which often leads to bingeing. Fortunately, there are many interesting and delicious ideas you can use to add flavour without the kilojoules.  Here are just a few suggestions below.

  • Herbs and spices – Create flavour and aroma by experimenting with the incredible variety of herbs and spices to liven up your food.
  • Mustards - Use to marinade meats, boost the flavour of salads or as substitute for butter.
  • Chilli - Use Tabasco, chilli powder, sweet chilli sauce, curry paste, minced chilli and fresh chilli's in salads, stir-fries, or with lean meats.
  • Sauté – Use liquid flavours like soy sauce, wine, tomato juice, balsamic vinegar or stock and use to stir fry meats and vegetables with less oil.
  • Marinades - Add flavour to lean meats and vegetables using spices rubs, garlic, ginger, wine, sherry, honey, soy sauce, hoi sin sauce and sweet chilli sauce.
  • Cheese and oil – Add small amounts of high kilojoule foods such as Parmesan cheese, olive oil and sour cream. A small portion of these concentrated foods can still add lots of flavour.

Finally, a positive attitude towards healthy eating is also important. Instead of describing healthy food as “rabbit food”, be proactive. Get creative in the kitchen, and seek out healthy recipes that taste great.

How important is attitude when it comes to healthy eating? How do you make healthy foods taste great?
