Walktober is a month long campaign designed to set a challenge and highlight the many benefits of walking. You can participate in one of the many events held during the month, get a team registered or just take part as an individual.

What’s involved?
As part of the Walktober challenge, participants log any walks they do throughout the month, which adds to a national tally. The aim is to see how many times participants can circumnavigate Australia's coastline. Registered walkers can also use the Walktober website to see how far they've walked, the number of kilojoules burned, the total minutes walked and the CO2 (greenhouse gas) that's been saved. You can even see how close you've gone to burning off a slice of chocolate mud cake.

According to the event organisers, Physical Activity Australia October is a time of year when you feel a spring’ in your step; the weather is warming up and it’s a great time to get outside. Walking creates healthier, happier individuals, more liveable environments, reduces pressure on our transport system and builds our sense of community.

You can register for Walktober here.

Walktober also allows us to highlight the ways that walking can boost your fitness and energy. Advanced walkers can use interval training to boost the kilojoule burning effect of exercise, and help the body adapt to a higher level of fitness and stamina. This may involve a very fast walk up a hill or stairs, or even a jog or run to up the intensity. It elevates your heart rate and metabolism, and boosts your vitality for several hours afterwards.

Walking is also a good cross training tool. It can be used as a form of active rest the day after an intense training session, where your body needs a lighter schedule to recover. Being light in intensity, it can also be used as a form of relaxation to help reduce stress.

Do you enjoy walking as a form of exercise? Will you register for the Walktober challenge?
