How much is your health worth?

As a naturopath I find it easy to prioritise my health, and especially when it comes to the matter of finances, it is always an effortless decision about what I choose to spend my money on.

It never ceases to amaze me how often people complain of the costs of good quality nourishing food when they don’t think twice about the cost of their chemical-laden expensive skin care or their new pair of shoes. Even when they are faced with health issues, they refuse to invest in naturopathic guidance or at least to take a look at what they could be doing that may be contributing to their ill health.

To me, there is nothing more important than health. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, health is at the 9very) foundation and is crucial to achieving the ultimate goal: self-actualisation.

We can easily blame marketing, lack of education and society pressures for the reasons people blindly spend the majority of their hard earned money on consumables that make no positive difference to themselves or the environment. But what about taking responsibility for your choices and especially your health and becoming more conscious?

I never compromise my health or vitality to keep up with the latest trends. I choose to spend my money wisely on organic and nutritious fresh food. I choose to spend my time preparing nutritious meals and making sure I get enough exercise, sleep and fun. I would say my life is holistic, balanced and abundant in good health and happiness…and it doesn’t cost me much at all!

I have a motto I tell my patients: 90% for the body and 10% for the soul. Sometimes we feel we need a little indulgence and pampering, or that new dress or belt. This is fine every now and then. It only becomes a problem when we make decisions that constantly neglect our primal needs for nourishment and wellbeing and indulgence becomes the norm.

Our human right is wellbeing. Health is where our bodies always strive to maintain and be. All we need to do is provide it with the correct conditions for this to happen: the right foods, nutrients, thoughts and feelings. Once any of these are missing, health becomes more difficult to maintain and disease will inevitably creep its way in.

I invite you to reconsider your health the next time you go to top up your expensive moisturiser or buy another pair of boots. Are these choices compromising your health? What value do you put on your wellbeing and vitality?
