
While a gym membership can be a fantastic addition to your health and fitness regime, it can also be a complete waste of money if you never go. And let’s face it, there are lots of people who sign up for long-term gym memberships, yet rarely use them.
In my time as a personal trainer, I knew of a popular gym chain where only 40% of members were active. My requests to chase up inactive members and encourage them with new programs all fell on deaf ears.
Some gyms may not want you to know this, but an inactive member means income without any wear and tear on the equipment, and more space in the car park. The only time I was encouraged to chase up inactive members was when their direct deposit contract was about to expire.
But that’s the reality of gym membership. You need to be self motivated. It’s unlikely somebody is going to ring you up and ask where you’ve been. You need to find ways to stay motivated, and make the most of your membership. Here are four ways to get good value from your gym fees.
