The latest Blackmores campaign aims to inspire people to ‘Move More’ by encouraging them to commit to do a little less and a little more. So in the spirit of the campaign I’ve asked a few friends (with their mum and dad hats on) if they were to pledge to a little more and a little less of something, what would it be?
Here’s what I uncovered.
A little less texting
Parents I spoke to have a love-hate relationship with texting but most agreed cutting back would be a positive move for their families. SMS undoubtedly has a place in modern parenting. A direct message that goes something like; “I am stuck in a meeting please can you make sure you pick up kids from school?” probably saves hundreds of Aussie mum and dads’ backsides each day. But the downside is that we don’t tend to text just when we really need to and sending and responding to a multitude of SMS messages is getting in the way of quality family time. But it’s not just volume that’s a problem, texting is a big distraction and it can be seriously dangerous. Many parents I spoke to admitted to texting while going about their daily activities with the kids as well as texting while driving, bathing, out on romantic date nights or during family meal times – boo!
A little more jogging and laughter
Perhaps my friends are a healthy lot but a significant number of parents I spoke to said they’d like to get out and pound the pavements more. And why not I say? Jogging is a fabulous way to start, end or even break up the day. It’s an activity you can do solo, with friends or even with a child or two – thanks to some spectacular jogging prams on the market these days (my tried and tested Mountain Buggy is seriously the bees’ knees).
Children tend to be natural comics but a few of my friends reported that in the hustle and bustle of everyday life they didn’t take the time to laugh at their quirky and sometimes downright crazy kids. Like my fellow mums and dads, I could do with looking at the bright side of parenting more. Laughter is not only good for the soul, it’s also contagious, a must for all-round wellbeing and like jogging, there’s probably no coincidence that it’s also free! The best things in life and all that, right?
