Where are you currently living?
Old Noarlunga, SA
What are you planning to use the $10 000 from Blackmores for as part of your Act 2?
I will be using the money from Blackmores to get my certification in dog behaviour management, and will be specialising in training rescued dogs to become therapy companions for soldiers with Post-traumatic stress disorder. I want to expand the current program making it easily accessible for all returned soldiers, as well as finding homes for neglected dogs in our community. I will also be putting the remainder of the money towards a property to build boarding kennels and a training facility.
What inspired you to this idea?
I saw a segment on television about a small group that are currently running a similar program and was left in tears. Military personnel are expected to be "tough" and "deal" with life after being posted overseas and returning home, and many find it difficult to assimilate back into society. The dogs are a non-threatening way to help them with their post-traumatic stress and they make wonderful, reliable companions. The other benefit is that dogs found in shelters are given a second chance at life. It was a truly heartwarming story and I would love to be part of something so meaningful.
Have you always loved dogs?
I am definitely an animal lover, and have always had a special place in my heart for dogs. I have two of my own, a Dalmatian named Cooper who is nearly 9 and a 3-year-old Great Dane named Cleo who is an RSPCA rescue dog. In my Act 1, I completed my Certificate II in Vet Nursing and managed dog boarding kennels, and spent time working in community services. This experience has definitely inspired my Act 2 – I want to help and give my time and skills to people in need.
Why do you think dogs will work well in the program you are planning?
There is real meaning to the phrase "man's best friend." Dogs don't judge or talk back; they keep secrets and love unconditionally, and they display the kind of loyalty a serviceman has for another and for their country. They are also incredibly versatile when it comes to providing assistance for all sorts of ailments and conditions including epilepsy suffers, pet therapy for children with social disorders as well as more well-known assistance, such as Guide Dogs.
Do you have any family or friends who are returned soldiers?
I do have friends and family who have served in both the Army and the Navy, and I have seen the need for a service like a companion dogs program to help them settle back into their communities and cope with the emotional element of returning to Australia. They are remarkable people who deserve the best care and support into their ‘Act 2’s, and I am hoping to make a valuable difference to their lives.
When are you hoping to have this program up and running?
As soon as possible! This money will be so helpful in allowing me to complete my course and establish the program immediately after. I believe it’s something the community needs now and I am grateful of receiving this money which will help me fast-track the process.
What advice would you give to other men and women looking to start an “Act 2” in their lives?
The advice I would give to others wanting to start an Act 2 in their life is ‘if you can dream it, you can do it’. I have achieved a lot in my life, done a lot of different things and had amazing experiences. I think it’s about becoming clear on what you want in life, writing it down and regularly reminding yourself that it is achievable. One way or another you will get there, and you might even get some help along the way!
What is the motto you live by?
Be kind to everyone you meet because everyone is fighting their own battles.
I also want to say a big thank you to Blackmores for helping me realise my dream and supporting Australia’s service men and women.
