Morning mum and dad-athons be gone!

Do you feel like you are competing in a mum or dad-athon each morning?

Do you feel like you are competing in a mum or dad-athon each morning? That is, as a parent, do you feel like you’ve run forty plus kilometres just to get to work, deliver your child/ren to school or turn up to your first outing?

It might be common but regularly feeling exhausted before a day begins is far from acceptable. So, for anyone looking to turn their household’s morning routine around here’s some hints and tips I’ve learnt after falling into this common parenting trap not so long ago:

  • Golden rule #1 - go to bed at an appropriate time based on family needs and daily routine
  • Use the night before wisely  – spend five to ten minutes to organise things like school uniforms, pack bags and plan outfits for the following day, including foot and headwear (nothing worse than spending half an hour looking for a missing shoe or school hat!)
  • Get up in good time each day – sounds obvious but sometimes getting up just 15 minutes earlier can make all the difference
  • Rise before children – whenever possible get up and enjoy a brief period (as little as five minutes) of solace before kids wake to help get yourself in the right headspace to start a day
  • Have a good breakfast – avoid sugary, highly processed cereals and opt instead for wholesome, low GI alternatives like porridge topped with fruit
  • Enjoy positive daily rituals – for caffeine fans a coffee in the morning is nice, indulgent kick start to a day but for a more healthy energy boost a daily multivitamin supplement like Blackmores Alive, might be just the ticket
  • Avoid or limit morning screen time – television or other electronic devices (particularly where kids are concerned) are often disruptive and best avoided
  • Reclaim “me time” at least once a week – aim to get up 45 minutes earlier than usual and use the time to do something, ideally active, that makes you happy. It’s amazing the clarity and buzz this will deliver throughout a day
