What happens to men between the ages of 40 and 50? Why is this time of life associated with a crisis? And is it inevitable part of this stage of life?
No doubt it's a time that may involve a job change, milestone birthday, divorce, loss of a parent or change in financial circumstances. It can also be a time of physical changes, such as the loss of hair, expanding waistline or a niggling injury that makes it that little bit harder to maintain the sporting prowess of younger years.
Whatever the event, it can be a time of sadness, reflection, and in some cases, regret. It's well known that some men seek relief in the shape of a sports car, or in a new connection with the opposite sex. But this could make things worse, both personally and financially.
With my 43rd birthday soon on the way, here are three things I'll be focusing on to keep things in perspective, and (hopefully) help me cruise through midlife without any major meltdowns.
Do you believe midlife can be a difficult period for men? Are there any strategies you would encourage other men to adopt to maintain balance in their life?
