Beauty more than skin deep

Beauty. More than skin deep?

After becoming a mum sticking to any beauty regime has fallen off my must-do list

I often feel like there just aren’t enough hours in a day. Things like exercising, spending time with my kids and partner, cooking family meals, keeping the house clean (ish), ferrying children around and paid work commitments all jostle for priority. And after becoming a mum sticking to any beauty regime has fallen off my must-do list and I’ve noticed the cost of this is increasingly serious…

The other day I had one of those lightbulb parenting moments. My once daily beauty regime had been engulfed by the demands of family life and I realised if I didn’t reprioritise it I would go on feeling below average.

When I say:  “do something,” I am not talking expensive cosmetics procedures. I am talking simple things like; drinking lots of water to give skin a healthy glow, putting in an organic hair colour every other month or just spending extra time washing or blow drying hair before stepping out the front door. I underestimated how much little beauty tricks like these can lift the spirit – especially when having a tough day with the kids.  It took me a while to work out that beauty may be more than skin deep but looking good also goes deeper than plain vanity. Being content with your appearance puts a real spring in your step and a smile to your face.

But as a working mother of two it’s easy to let things go on the beauty front. Time is in short supply and often mums are more concerned about how their children look than themselves.  But where do you draw a line? By cutting personal maintenance down to a bare minimum I didn’t feel as good as I should - or could. So with this in mind I am all for bringing back daily “me preening,” by finding ten or so minutes - somehow…

Do you have a favourite and speedy self-maintenance trick that instantly makes you feel better about yourself? What is it?
