Spooky Skin Spray

I have to admit that I hold a secret love for all things spooky, including Halloween. There’s nothing like the love of a haunted holiday to inspire imagination, fun and a dress up.

I have to admit that I hold a secret love for all things spooky, including Halloween. There’s nothing like the love of a haunted holiday to inspire imagination, fun and a dress up.

The week before Halloween was going great. I was sewing my outfit for a Halloween fundraiser cruise, when I caught sight of myself in the mirror. Low and behold there were some unexpectedly spooky spots sprouting on my face. I realized it must my monthly pre-menstrual skin coming up to haunt me.

So, of course, I did what every good naturopath may do in this situation - I grabbed the witch. Witch hazel, that is. I made a pre-menstrual skin spray – which for the purpose of Halloween I’ll call “Spooky Skin Spray”. It had witch hazel, calendula and tea tree oil. Here's how you can make it:

Spooky Skin Spray

  • Small glass or plastic spray bottle.
  • Witch hazel liquid/toner
  • Calendula flowers, dried (to make up in a tea)
  • Tea tree essential oil (or lavender)

Boil some water and cover 2-3 teaspoons of dried (or fresh) calendula flowers with the boiling water. Fill to make above ½ cup. Fill half the bottle with the calendula water and the other half with the witch hazel liquid. Add one drop of the tea tree essential oil.

This spray contains witch hazel which helps to tone and astringe the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory and soothing prosperities. Calendula helps soothes irritated and inflamed skin, and the tea tree has anti-bacterial properties. I would recommend using it on the skin 2-3 times per day. It is especially good for oily skin. If your skin is very dry, add more calendula and less witch hazel.

The cruise was great, and although my spots didn't disappear completely, the potion had a little magic in it to help my skin for Halloween. Just remember this skin spray can be made whenever you’re feeling a little scared of your skin, not just at Halloween!
