Are excuses making you fat?

Let’s face it – we’re all busy, and if you look hard enough, it’s easy to find an excuse not to exercise.

Let’s face it – we’re all busy, and if you look hard enough, it’s easy to find an excuse not to exercise.

As a personal trainer, I can assure you I’ve heard every excuse in the book. From “I’ve had too much to drink at lunch”, to “I can feel a cold coming on”, it’s amazing how resourceful people can be when it comes to finding excuses instead of taking action.

Making excuses becomes a habit that is used to protect self-esteem and give yourself permission to avoid change. There always seems to be a reason why some people can't exercise, can't push themselves harder that day, can't change their diet yet, can't drink less alcohol this weekend, can't find the time, can't get out of bed early this week, and don't feel motivated. For some people, making excuses is often the greatest barrier to lasting weight loss. And just like a poor diet, poor excuses are fattening.

So instead of being an excuse maker, I encourage you to work on becoming a solution seeker. A solution seeker is the opposite of an excuse maker, and is constantly focused on solving problems.

For every excuse there is an alternative or solution, another way to make the sort of choices that will improve your health and make a difference.

For example, a personal training client of mine was having trouble finding the time to exercise, so she formed a lunchtime walking club at her work. She is a solution seeker. If you don't want to do something, you’ll find an excuse, but if you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you want results, become a solution seeker, and get out of the excuse making mindset.

Are you an excuse maker or a solution seeker? What’s the worst excuse you’ve used / heard of to avoid exercise?
