Time to come back into balance

I have written before about the need to regain balance after life and poor food choices have tipped the scales of digestive health into negative.

I have written before about the need to regain balance after life and poor food choices have tipped the scales of digestive health into negative.

Well, I have recently found myself in the 'digestive negative' again, after being tempted by too many tummy warming hot meals, warm milky cuppas with accompanying sweet treats, and a general disregard for tell-tale symptoms. Yes, if I really was more concerned with the mild yet persistent bloating, nausea and burning, I may well have tamed this beast before it turned into the raging monster that it is today. The good news; balance can be restored relatively quickly by making some simple, yet much more tummy friendly dietary changes.

If you, like me, have found yourself on the wrong side of the digestive scales, here are a few simple tips that have definitely helped me out:

  1. On rising, drink a warm cup of tummy calming herbal tea (eg. chamomile, fennel, licorice, lemon balm, peppermint)
  2. Have breakfast before having regular tea or coffee in the mornings
  3. Choose foods that are blander in flavour and more natural than you may have been consuming lately
  4. Keep an eye on portion sizes. Do you really need (or indeed want) that extra helping? Eat small portions regularly
  5. Be aware of your body. What does your body need right now? What does your body feel like? (as opposed to what you are mentally craving)
  6. Take some probiotics ('good bacteria', eg Acidophilus bifidus)
  7. Drink lots of pure water and herbal teas throughout the day
  8. Limit cups of non-herbal tea and coffee throughout the day
  9. Keep away from sugary foods – simply avoiding those will probably make a big difference
  10. If it's highly processed, forget it. Try to eat only that which has once lived and has been minimally processed
  11. Take bitter herbs in liquid form (eg. dandelion root, gentian, globe artichoke) 15-20mins before meals to get the digestive juices flowing
  12. Take additional liver friendly herbs such as milk thistle if nausea is present or you have been over-consuming rich, fatty foods or alcohol
  13. Move your body! Exercise improves circulation and helps to massage the digestive organs
  14. Take some deep breaths. The calmer you are, the better your digestive system can function

Wishing you all the best in digestive balance!
