Healthy weight week (January 22 to 29th) raises awareness of the importance of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle. It’s a good initiative by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), set at a time when many New Year’s resolutions are fading into a distant memory. This year’s theme is ‘one change at a time’, and the idea is to motivate Australians to make a healthy pledge to take on healthy eating and exercise habits.

It’s also a good excuse to focus on what unique changes you could make over the next 7 days to help manage your body fat levels. Following is a list of suggested lifestyle changes you could adopt for all of healthy weight week.

  • Make a pledge – Identify one area of your diet that needs attention, and focus on changing that behaviour for a week. For example, you could cut back on alcohol, eat more vegetables, drink more water, cut out take away food, or eat breakfast every day. The philosophy of only making one change at a time means you won’t feel overwhelmed, and it also increases the odds that you will stick with that lifestyle change after the week is over.
  • Set out a 7 day meal plan - The more decisions you leave to the last minute, the greater your chance of making poor food choices. An organised approach to your food can be the difference between a healthy meal waiting at home, or a rushed trip for take away. Planning your meals in advance is a great way to make small and gradual changes to your eating habits, and control your daily kilojoule intake. Map out what you plan to eat over the next 7 days, and stick to it as best you can.
