Wednesday October 16 2013 is National Ride2Work Day, a program designed to get people started (or to maintain) riding a bike to work.

Run by the Bicycle Network along with state and territory cycling organisations across Australia, it's a good excuse to move from contemplation to action.

If your commute is 5-10 kilometers, or if there are ways you could incorporate a partial ride in your commute, riding to work is ideal (not that shorter or longer commutes should be discouraged).

Some of the advantages of riding your bike to work are:

  • It helps you lose/manage weight
  • It reduces stress
  • It saves on fuel costs
  • It's good for the environment
  • It's a great start to the day
  • Depending on traffic, it may even save time

With so many benefits on offer, you could even encourage your friends, family and workmates to take part.

To participate in National Ride2Work Day and help build the case for better bike facilities in your community, register here.

And a final word on safety- a major priority for cyclists, especially on busy roads.

  • Always wear a helmet, bright coloured clothes and reflectors.
  • Follow traffic laws and ride like the drivers can't see you.
  • Make sure you have a light if you ride at night, and always be on the lookout for parked cars with opening doors.
  • Use your water bottle frequently along the way. Taking regular, small sips is the best way to keep yourself hydrated.

Do you ever ride a bike to work? Will you register for National Ride2Work Day?
