Managing PMS can be difficult at the best of times, so here are some tips to ease the hormonal burden.

Get organised. Get yourself an app, diary or chart that gives you an idea about when your unwelcome PMS “friend” is on it’s way. This will allow you be plan those days more thoughtfully and is especially important for those of us who really struggle to cope with daily life during this time.

Lay low. If you know when you’re pre-menstrual, why not block out unnecessary “extras” in advance. If friends ask about catching up, you can schedule a visit the week before or after your PMS has abated.

Avoid stressful situations. This for me would include a weekend shopping mission. Grocery shopping, especially in the city, is hectic and chaotic at the best of times, but add the weekend crowds and PMS, and you’re up for an explosive experience. I would suggest doing a bigger shop the week before and after, or why not download a shopping app and shop from home. Your groceries will be delivered to your front door, and even although it’s a bit pricier, it’s a small fee to pay for sanity. Other stressful conditions might include making major life decisions, or other big purchases.

Relax and reconnect. I find that the menstrual cycle is an ebb and flow of emotions. Often the pre-menstrual days are retrospective, and introspective, dredging up those inner thoughts and feelings. It can be a good time to journal, or reconnect with your self and listen to those inner thoughts. Mediation, solitude or a meaningful movie are sometimes just what the doctor ordered, along with a good cup of tea.

Get plenty of rest. I find that within the working week sleeping-in is not an option, but getting to sleep earlier is. With more sleep, coping with stress is easier.

Exercise. A jolly jog or brisk walk will not only get you into nature and more connected with your surrounds, but also helps with stress and feelings of sadness. Strap on your shoes and get moving, all in the name of eradicating PMS.

Tea for one. Stock up on some nice tea to help you through your pre-menstrual days. This will provide you with a nice soothing ritual when you’re not feeling like a super star. I would suggest chamomile, passionflower, lemon balm, lavender, and ginseng. This is a great way to take care of yourself emotionally, and the tea will work on a physical level by helping you to relax.
