These energy-replenishing bars are something of a treat. But don’t feel too guilty, they also have the goodness of oats, chia seeds and flax seeds. Enjoy them with a restorative ginger tea when that 3.30-itis takes hold.

90g butter, diced
70g rice malt syrup, maple syrup or honey
80g pitted dried dates or cranberries, finely chopped
200g oats
25g chia seeds
25g flax seeds
pinch sea salt
pinch cinnamon
1. Preheat oven to 170°C (160°C fan forced).
2. Place the sugar, butter and syrup into a small saucepan and melt, stirring often, over medium heat to form a light, sticky caramel.
3. Add the dates, oats, chia seeds, flax seeds, salt and cinnamon. Mix to combine.
4. Line a brownie tin with baking paper, and press the mixture evenly onto the base.
5. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and allow to cool before slicing. Store in an airtight container.
