For years, the gut’s only job seemed to be digestion. That assumption couldn’t have been more wrong.
Mia, 38, hates camping. It’s not because she’s precious about getting dirty. Camping just messes with her gut. Three days into any trip, she’s overloading on fibre and necking litres of water, silently pleading with her intestines to cooperate. That’s what gut health means to many of us. Digestion. Constipation. Bloating. The occasional probiotic after antibiotics. Something we think about only when it’s not working.
But digestion is just the part we can feel. And that’s the plot twist.
For years, many of us have chalked up tiredness, skin drama, emotional rollercoasting and sudden waves of mild anxiety to hormones, stress or simply getting older. But underneath all that, researchers have uncovered something remarkable. The trillions of microorganisms living inside the digestive tract aren’t simply helping us digest our lunch. They form a complex ecosystem, the gut microbiome, that communicates with the immune system, the brain and the body’s hormone pathways, affecting quite literally everything.
As it turns out, the gut is one of the busiest communications hubs in the body.
As naturopath Lillian Kenny explains, understanding the microbiome “shifts the focus from managing individual symptoms to supporting the body as an interconnected system.”
That’s an important shift, because for years we’ve been asking different parts of the body different questions. The skin belongs to dermatology. Hormones belong to endocrinology. Mood belongs to psychology. Digestion belongs to gastroenterology. Fair enough, they’re separate specialties for good reason. But the microbiome doesn’t recognise any of those boundaries.
The trillions of microbes living inside the gut are in constant conversation with almost every major system in the body. They help break down food into usable nutrients, support immune function, produce compounds that nourish the gut lining and participate in the metabolism of hormones, including oestrogen.

And there’s another layer to this. Hidden inside the microbiome is an even smaller community called the estrobolome. Its job isn’t to produce oestrogen. Its role appears to be helping regulate what happens to oestrogen once the body has finished using it. Every day the body produces and recycles hormones, and certain gut bacteria help metabolise oestrogen, influencing how it’s processed before it’s excreted.
Researchers are still working through exactly how that relationship operates, but it’s quickly become one of the most exciting areas in women’s health, because it suggests the gut microbiome may directly influence hormone balance. It’s also a reminder that hormones don’t operate in isolation.
Neither does the gut. Or the brain. Or the immune system. They’re all talking.
That’s possibly why eating better doesn’t always make us feel better, and parking the booze for a month doesn’t always deliver the transformation we hoped for. The body isn’t a checklist where one healthy habit automatically fixes every symptom. Hormones, sleep, genetics, nutrition and underlying health all matter. The gut isn’t the whole answer, but researchers increasingly believe it is one piece of the puzzle we’ve been overlooking.
So, what does help?
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that the evidence leans towards adding, rather than subtracting. Instead of more restrictive eating, researchers are finding different microbes thrive on different fibres and nutrients. The more diverse the menu, the more diverse the microbial community it’s likely to support.
Fibre deserves a special mention here because, unlike many nutrients, it isn’t really feeding us. It’s feeding the trillions of microbes living inside us. As they break it down, they produce compounds that help support the gut lining and influence wider aspects of health. Fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir and kimchi may also support microbial diversity, while regular exercise, good quality sleep and managing chronic stress all help create an environment where microbes thrive.
Of course, life will at times take hold, and while antibiotics can be used for good, they don’t distinguish between good and bad bacteria, and can temporarily disrupt the microbiome. For some people, especially after antibiotics, a probiotic supplement may complement an already healthy diet, but the word really is complement, because while scientists continue exploring how the microbiome and the estrobolome within it influence women’s health, the strongest evidence still points back to the fundamentals: consistently looking after the ecosystem we’ve been carrying all along.
The good news? The microbiome isn’t set in stone. As Lillian Kenny points out, one of the most encouraging discoveries is just how adaptable it is.
“The microbiome is highly responsive to dietary change. Increasing fibre intake and eating a more diverse range of plant foods can begin altering the gut microbiome within days, with measurable changes often seen within a few weeks.”
It’s always responding to the choices we make: what we eat, how we sleep, how we move, even how we manage stress. Some changes can happen surprisingly quickly, but the benefits come from consistency, not perfection. The body isn’t expecting seven flawless days. It’s hoping for years of reasonably good ones.
The gut isn’t just an organ that stages a protest three days into a camping trip. It’s an ecosystem, one that’s constantly translating food into fuel, taking part in hormone metabolism and talking to systems we’d always assumed operated independently.
The more we learn, the more it seems women’s health isn’t about chasing the next miracle fix. It’s about recognising that the body has been holding one long conversation all along. We’re only just beginning to understand it.
