Case Study: Protecting the future of anchovies

Anchovies are an important source of the fish oil used in many Blackmores products, so we’ve taken a close look at how this small species is being affected by a rapidly changing ocean. Our anchovies come from the wild-caught Peruvian anchoveta fishery, one of the world’s most significant marine resources. To better understand the pressures on this fishery, we worked with environmental specialists Pollination to assess the health of the ecosystem and the risks linked to harvesting.

The study focused on Peru’s north-central fishing zone, where anchovies are caught across a vast area around 160 kilometres out to sea. Recent climate shifts have already disrupted fishing seasons in 2023 and 2024, making it even more important to understand how warming oceans and changing weather patterns influence species health and long-term supply.

The assessment helped identify where the greatest impacts occur. It found that most of the environmental footprint sits at the point of fishing and early processing, which together account for more than half of total emissions associated with this ingredient.

These insights are guiding how we work with suppliers and partners. They help us support responsible fishing practices, strengthen conservation efforts, and back the ongoing Marine Stewardship Council certification process. By understanding the pressures on anchovy populations, we can make more informed decisions that protect ocean health and support a resilient supply chain.

Blackmores is taking clear steps to reduce its environmental footprint and deliver on our commitment to reach Net Zero emissions by 2030. This year, we reduced our Group emissions by 38 percent and cut manufacturing emissions by 48 percent compared to the prior year. A key milestone was the transition to 100 percent renewable electricity across all Australian-operated facilities from January 2024, supported by a long-term renewable power purchasing agreement for our Braeside manufacturing site.

We continue to invest in energy efficiency measures across our operations, including upgrades to air-handling units, LED lighting installations and improved monitoring systems to better track and manage energy use. We also progressed our work on climate risk assessments, participating in sector initiatives and government pilots to strengthen our understanding of climate impacts across our supply chain.

As part of our broader Net Zero pathway, we are also investing in quality carbon offset projects that conserve endangered ecosystems, such as peatland protection in Central Kalimantan and the regeneration of native Australian landscapes. These projects help prevent carbon emissions while supporting biodiversity and community outcomes.

By switching to renewable energy, improving our efficiency and investing in nature-based solutions, we are taking practical steps to shrink our footprint and build a more resilient future for the communities we serve.

Blackmores five principles for protecting people in our supply chain

Modern slavery is an extensive and endemic justice issue. Further to the requirement for all wages and working conditions to be lawful, Blackmores has identified five principles that should apply to every worker.

We have mechanisms through our supplier assessment and audit program to observe issues relating to each principle, empowering us to identify areas of concern and offer remediation for continuous improvement.

Today, 80% of Blackmores’ packaging footprint is designed for end-of-life recovery. We’ve increased the use of recycled materials across many of our formats. Our glass bottles now contain up to 30 percent post-consumer recycled glass, steel cans include 15 percent recycled content and our Australian-sourced corrugated board contains more than 80 percent post-consumer recycled material. More than half of our shippers are made from 100 percent recycled content.

We’ve also begun trials to lift recycled content in plastic lids and embedded packaging assessments into our product innovation process, drawing on accredited life cycle tools to understand the environmental footprint of each format.

These improvements are already making a difference. Our waste efficiency improved by 6 percent this year, with waste generated per 1,000 units of product sold falling from 39 kilograms to 37 kilograms. And 69 percent of onsite waste was diverted from landfill through better sorting and recovery.

Blackmores has partnered with the NBL and, for the first time, the WNBL to help more Australians experience the wellbeing benefits of movement. Announced in September 2025, the partnership expands our support across both leagues and brings our health and activity message to communities across the country. The collaboration includes the Health and Hoops program, a series of community clinics delivered with NBL and WNBL players to inspire kids and families to move more, build confidence and enjoy the social and physical benefits of sport.

Basketball is one of Australia’s fastest-growing sports, particularly among children, which makes it a powerful platform to promote everyday wellbeing. Ambassadors from both leagues, including Andrew Gaze, Chris Goulding, Lauren Jackson and emerging talent Nyadiew Pouch, are helping bring the partnership to life by sharing their own stories of health, recovery and resilience.

Yes. We work with growers, fisheries and suppliers who share our commitment to quality and sustainability. This includes assessing nature and climate risks for key ingredients, supporting certification programs such as the Marine Stewardship Council for marine oils and encouraging responsible farming, harvesting and processing practices. We also reference CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) to safeguard certain species from over-exploitation.

We’re redesigning our packaging to be simpler and easier to recycle. Many of our glass bottles now contain up to 30 percent recycled content, our steel cans include recycled material and most of our cardboard is made from recycled fibre. We’re also embedding packaging assessments into our product development, so sustainability is considered from the beginning.

Most Blackmores packaging is kerbside recyclable. Glass bottles, cardboard boxes, steel cans and many closures can go straight into your home recycling bin. Some specialised components may require specific disposal, so we provide clear instructions on our labels and website to help you make the right choice.
