Whether it’s something non-alcoholic to sip on, or just a tasty alternative to water, Kathryn Terrill uncovers some delicious drink recipes that will make your digestive system smile.

Heading out to a BYO drinks barbeque or party can be a bit of a drag when you plan to be alcohol free.

Soft drinks are not really a healthy alternative, and if what you’re drinking is boring, you may feel a bit left out.

Never fear! With these drink recipes up your sleeve, you will never feel boring again, and your digestive system will love you forever.

Grapefruit and Pineapple Spritzer

This is another refreshing favourite. This one is less filling and great on a hot day or at a party. To make for four people, combine the following ingredients in a large jug or punch bowl:

  • 500 ml pink grapefruit juice (100% natural or freshly squeezed)
  • 250 ml pineapple juice (100% natural)
  • 750 ml sparkling mineral water
  • Ice cubes
  • Two handfuls of fresh mint, finely chopped

Grapefruit is packed with vitamin C, and has been touted as beneficial for stomach, liver and intestinal health. Pineapple contains bromelain, which is an enzyme that may assist with digesting proteins in foods, and is also anti-inflammatory. Members of the mint family (including peppermint and spearmint) have been used for digestive distress, indigestion and lack of appetite. Your tummy will love you, as will your tastebuds

Paw Paw and Pear Paradise

This zingy treat can also be a great way to start the day. Get your blender ready and throw in the following ingredients to serve one:

  • 100g fresh-sliced pawpaw
  • Juice from a lime
  • 2 peeled and sliced pears
  • 200 ml of rice milk
  • A pinch of finely grated fresh ginger
  • Crushed ice

Pawpaw contains papain, which is a protein-digesting enzyme. This may help your stomach digest protein-containing foods. Ginger has a history of traditional use as a digestive aid, and for flatulence. Lime has traditionally been used for digestive and liver disorders, such as stomach upsets and diarrhoea. All this good news will leave your tummy jumping with joy!

Carrot, Coriander and Orange Juice

Throw the following ingredients into a juicer for a healthy pick-me-up:

  • 5 carrots
  • 3 oranges (peeled)
  • A handful of fresh coriander leaves
  • Pour over ice cubes to serve

Carrots and oranges are a great source of vitamin C. Carrots have been used as they are rich in fibre to ease constipation and other gastrointestinal disorders. Coriander leaves have been used to improve digestion and reduce nausea.
